Breviceps fuscus: The Burrowing Black Rain Frog
Breviceps fuscus, also known as the black rain frog or plain rain frog, is a burrowing frog native to the southern coast of Africa. As its name suggests, this species is predominantly black in coloration, giving it a distinctive and grumpy appearance. It is commonly found in tunnels up to 150 mm deep or among vegetation up to 30 cm above the ground.
Habitat and Distribution
Breviceps fuscus is found exclusively in the southern coastal regions of Africa at elevations of up to 3300 feet. Its habitat includes areas with abundant vegetation and access to water. Due to its limited range and specific habitat requirements, this species is considered vulnerable to environmental changes.
Physical Characteristics
Rain frogs, including Breviceps fuscus, have distinctive physical characteristics. They have round eyes, webbed toes, and short limbs that limit their range of motion. Despite their limited mobility, they are capable of hopping around on land.
